How it works

Warble sine tones at 125, 250, 500, 1k, 2k, 4k, and 8k Hz are hard-panned per ear with a StereoPannerNode and shaped with a click-free envelope plus a 5 Hz warble LFO. Each frequency starts at -30 dBFS and follows a 10 dB down / 5 dB up staircase over four presentations; the quietest heard level locks as the screening threshold. Thresholds render as an SVG audiogram and persist in localStorage. Nothing is uploaded or recorded, and no sound plays until you ask for it.

Warble tones and dBFS levels

Every presentation is a sine with a gentle 5 Hz warble around the exact labelled frequency, shaped with a click-free envelope and hard-panned to the tested ear. Levels are shown in dBFS, relative to full scale — never in SPL — because browsers cannot know your headphone sensitivity or volume knob. Keep the volume fixed for the whole ear so thresholds stay comparable.

What your audiogram means

Higher points mean quieter thresholds in this screening. A flat pair of traces means similar sensitivity across frequencies in this session; a dip at one frequency means you needed a louder presentation there today. Room noise, fit, volume changes, and earwax all move screening thresholds, so treat the chart as a reason to retest or see a professional — never as a diagnosis.

How does the staircase work?

Each frequency starts at -30 dBFS. When you mark a tone as heard, the next presentation plays 10 dB quieter; when you miss it, the next plays 5 dB louder. After four presentations the quietest heard level locks as the screening threshold for that frequency.

Why warble tones instead of pure tones?

A warble tone gently wobbles around the labelled frequency at 5 Hz, which reduces standing-wave effects from room modes and headphone placement. The labelled frequency stays exact, and the wobble makes the screening more stable on real-world equipment.

How do I read the audiogram result?

Frequencies run left to right from 125 Hz to 8 kHz, and levels run top to bottom from -60 dBFS (quiet, better screening threshold) to -5 dBFS (loud). Circles marked L are your left ear and crosses marked R are your right ear. Points higher on the chart mean you heard quieter presentations at that frequency.

Why test one ear at a time?

Hearing can differ between ears, and a mixed test hides that. The tone is hard-panned fully left or right so each ear is screened independently. Complete the left ear, switch ears, and compare the two traces.

Is this safe for my hearing?

Start at a low volume and never raise the volume to make a tone audible.
