How it works
Discrete sine presets at 10, 20, 30, 40, 60, 80, and 100 Hz are generated live with the Web Audio API at a modest fixed gain with a click-free envelope. Each preset plays only from a button you press, per-step heard/not-heard answers build a map, and the last map persists in localStorage. Nothing is uploaded or recorded.

Discrete 10–100 Hz tones
Each preset is a continuous sine at exactly the labelled frequency with a click-free attack and release. Work upward from 10 Hz at a low, fixed volume and note where clean output begins. Buzzing, chuffing, or rattling marks a speaker or room limit, not your hearing.
Device limits and felt bass
True sub-bass below 40–60 Hz is felt rather than heard. Expect pressure and room vibration with almost no pitch on the lowest presets when the system is working. If 10–30 Hz are silent on a phone or laptop, that is physics — retest on capable gear.

What frequencies does this test cover?

Why can't I hear the lowest tones on my phone?
Phone and laptop speakers physically cannot reproduce 10–60 Hz — their drivers roll off steeply below about 100–200 Hz. A silent preset on small speakers is an equipment limit, not a hearing result. Retest on headphones or a subwoofer before drawing any conclusion.
Should low bass be heard or felt?
Below roughly 40–60 Hz, bass is felt as much as heard — pressure, chest movement, or room vibration with little pitch. Judge the lowest presets by air movement and sympathetic vibration as well as by tone. That is normal and expected.
How should I run the test?
Use headphones or a subwoofer in a quiet room, start at 10 Hz at a low volume, and work upward. Play each tone once, mark heard or not heard, and keep the volume fixed for the whole set. Your last map is saved in this browser only.
Is this a medical hearing test?
No. It is educational screening only and is not a medical device. Levels are reported in dBFS, relative to full scale, never in SPL. It cannot diagnose hearing loss.
Is this safe for my speakers and hearing?
Start low and keep gains modest — sub-bass at high gain can distort cheap speakers. Every tone starts only from a button you press, a persistent Stop and Mute are always available, and you should never raise the volume just to make a 10 Hz tone audible.
