How it works

A stepped sine walk plays once per step at a modest fixed gain with a click-free envelope: nine low steps from 20 to 200 Hz and ten high steps from 2 kHz to 20 kHz. Per-step heard/not-heard answers advance the walk automatically and build a heard map that persists in localStorage. Nothing is uploaded or recorded, and no sound plays until you ask for it.

A frequency check walks you through the edges of the audible range one step at a time. Choose the low walk from 20 Hz to 200 Hz or the high walk from 2 kHz to 20 kHz, play each step once, and mark it heard or not heard. The page advances automatically and builds a heard/not-heard map with a heard count. Everything runs live in your browser — nothing is uploaded — and the last walk is saved locally. Low walk, 20–200 Hz

Nine steps at 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, 100, 150, and 200 Hz. Expect the bottom steps to be felt as much as heard on capable gear, and expect silence on phone speakers — that is an equipment limit. Work upward at a low, fixed volume.

High walk, 2–20 kHz

Ten steps at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20 kHz. Keep the volume fixed and never raise it to chase a fading top step. Missed top steps are common and informational only.

What is a frequency check?

A guided audibility walk — the page plays stepped sine tones in order and you mark each one heard or not heard. The low walk covers 20–200 Hz in nine steps and the high walk covers 2–20 kHz in ten steps. The result is a heard map, not a diagnosis.

How is this different from the hearing test?

The hearing test runs a per-frequency staircase to estimate the quietest heard level and draws an audiogram. The frequency check is simpler — one presentation per step at a fixed modest level, answered heard or not heard, producing a coverage map of your system plus ears in this session.

How should I run a walk?

Pick Low or High, use headphones in a quiet room, and keep the volume fixed for the whole walk. Press Play step, mark I heard it or I did not hear it, and the walk advances automatically. Do not raise the volume to chase a quiet step.

Why are my lowest steps silent?

Small speakers roll off steeply below about 100–200 Hz, so silent 20–40 Hz steps usually mean an equipment limit, not a hearing result. Retest on headphones or full-range speakers. High steps can also vanish from Bluetooth resampling or age-related sensitivity — all informational, never diagnostic.

Is my walk saved?

Yes, the last walk is saved in this browser only with a timestamp and a heard count. Use Clear saved walk to reset. Nothing is uploaded or recorded.

Is this safe for my hearing?

Start at a low volume. Every step starts only from a button you press, a persistent Stop and Mute are always available, and levels are reported in dBFS, relative to full scale, never in SPL.
