How it works

Noise is synthesised live in your browser inside an AudioWorklet. White noise is filtered to produce the pink, brown, blue, violet, and grey colors. Nothing is uploaded or recorded. Levels are reported in dBFS, relative to full scale.

A noise generator plays broadband sound that contains all frequencies at once. Instead of one pitch, you get a steady texture whose “color” describes how the energy is distributed from low to high. It is one of the most useful signals for testing speakers, headphones, and rooms, and for masking background sound. Everything is generated live in your browser with an AudioWorklet, so nothing is uploaded and nothing is recorded.

White noise generator

White noise has equal energy per hertz, which makes it sound bright and hissy. It is the reference signal for spectrum analysis because the energy is flat across the band, and it is the raw material for the filtered colors below.

Pink noise generator

Pink noise carries equal energy per octave: energy falls by about 3 dB per octave, so the low octaves hold as much energy as the high ones. Because hearing is roughly logarithmic, pink noise sounds even and natural, and it is the standard signal for room tuning and loudspeaker calibration.

Brown noise generator

Brown noise (also called red noise) falls by about 6 dB per octave, so it is dominated by low frequencies and sounds like a deep rumble, a waterfall, or distant thunder. It is a popular choice for masking and for testing subwoofers and bass drivers.

Blue, violet, and grey noise

Blue noise rises by 3 dB per octave and violet noise by 6 dB per octave, both emphasising high frequencies; they are useful for exercising tweeters and for masking low-frequency noise.
