In-ear monitors (IEMs) and true wireless earbuds have completely different acoustic physics than open-back or over-ear headphones. Because the driver operates inside your enclosed ear canal, acoustic seal and tip insertion depth dictate the sound.
The Canal Seal Phenomenon
Unlike speakers that project sound into a large room, in-ear drivers couple directly to your ear canal’s tiny air volume (~1.0 cm³).
- Airtight Seal: Acoustic pressure is maintained down to 20 Hz, delivering deep, physical sub-bass rumble without distortion.
- Micro-Leakage (0.5mm gap): The acoustic impedance collapses. The leak transforms the ear canal into an acoustic high-pass filter, rolling off frequencies below 150 Hz by up to 20 dB.
Diagnosing Channel Drift & Wax Blockage
If you notice your audio pulling slightly to the left or right:
- Test High Frequencies (4 kHz & 8 kHz): Microscopic wax particles block short high-frequency wavelengths first. If 8 kHz leans to one side while 250 Hz is centered, the nozzle filter needs isopropyl alcohol cleaning or tip replacement.
- Test Low Frequencies (125 Hz & 250 Hz): If bass leans to one ear, check whether that ear’s tip size needs to be one size larger to account for natural ear canal asymmetry.

Why do my new earbuds sound tinny and have no bass?
95% of the time, weak earbud bass is caused by an incomplete ear canal seal. In-ear drivers rely entirely on a sealed acoustic chamber to transfer sub-bass frequencies below 100 Hz. If your ear tip is even slightly too small or seated poorly, bass pressure leaks into open air. Switch to a larger silicone tip or memory foam tips.
How does the 50 Hz vs 500 Hz seal test work?
500 Hz midrange sound is largely immune to ear canal air leakage, but 50 Hz sub-bass requires an airtight seal. If the 500 Hz tone is loud while the 50 Hz tone is faint, your seal is broken. When both tones sound full and present, your ear tips form an airtight acoustic chamber.
Why does one earbud sound quieter than the other?
Driver volume imbalances in earbuds are almost always caused by compacted earwax clogging the acoustic mesh filter inside the nozzle tip. Using our stepped channel balance frequencies (125 Hz to 8 kHz), you can identify if high frequencies drift off-center, indicating that the nozzle mesh needs cleaning.
What is phantom center imaging in earbuds?
When an identical mono sound is played into both ears, your brain synthesizes an imaginary sound source located directly in the center of your head ('phantom center'). If the drivers are matched in impedance and sensitivity, the center image remains steady across all frequencies.
How do I test left versus right earbuds?
Play the left-only and right-only checks in turn and confirm sound stays entirely in the named bud with no bleed or imbalance. Then run the seal and bass steps, since a loose tip loses sub-bass first. Swap buds between ears to separate a faulty driver from wax buildup or a hearing difference.
