Understanding the Key Metrics
1. Ambient Noise Floor (dBFS)
The noise floor represents the quietest level of sound captured when no one is speaking. It combines acoustic room noise (computer fans, outdoor traffic, air conditioning) and electrical self-noise from the microphone capsule and audio preamplifier.
2. Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR)
SNR measures how much louder your voice is compared to the ambient background noise. A higher SNR yields crisp, effortless intelligibility without requiring aggressive software noise suppression that can make voices sound robotic.
3. Digital Clipping & Headroom
When acoustic volume exceeds the converter’s maximum dynamic capacity, waveforms are truncated into harsh square edges. Maintaining at least 3 dB of peak headroom prevents transient distortion.
